The Windmill |
In 1870, Fred Meiss built a Dutch styled windmill with a wingspan of 135
feet to power the stones of his stone grinder. Mr. Meiss built his windmill
in Spring Creek, just outside of Victoria, Texas, and people traveled for miles
to bring him corn to grind into cornmeal. Years later his descendents donated
the windmill to the Morning Study Club and it was restored and moved to
Memorial Square in downtown Victoria. Over 130 years after Mr. Meiss started
his business, his great great great grandson Michael Maraggia has started
his own stone milling business about 20 miles from where the original mill
stood.
The Morning Study Club is always seeking donation to help with the upkeep
of the Windmill. If you are interested in making a donation or have any
questions please contact Belva Zirjacks at 361-575-0998 or e-mail her
at belvaz@cox-internet.com.
